The term is now over half way through with a number of events and trips having been held and quite a number planned for the rest of the term. The children take great joy and learning out of class trips and pride when they are able represent the school at sporting and artistic events. It has been wonderful seeing so many parents being able to assist our teacher’s and students on these trips. We thank you for ongoing support as without your assistance we would not be able to offer these experiences for our students. We have our school cross country races coming up and we invite you to come along to cheer on the students and meet other parents. We had a great spectator turn out last year and your presence really added to the carnival atmosphere of the event.

I had the pleasure of attending the Northern Zone Non-Stop cricket festival day last week with 16 of our students. The is was a fun, non-competitive event for the student to try out the game of cricket no matter what their skill level is. Our students entered fully into the spirit of the day, playing for fun, supporting each other and showing great sportsmanship towards the opposition players. Well done to everyone who attended and thank you to Andrew, Mukash and Donna who came along to help the teams.

Coffee Cart
Thank you to the student and parents for your cooperation and support as we tested out our new procedures for serving the students the coffee cart last Wednesday.
While things went much more smoothly and more students were able to make purchases, many students were turned away at the end of morning tea and it is clear that this will be an ongoing issue. To avoid the students being disappointed each week we are going to allocate a Wednesday to different year groups with the aim that students will know which day they will be able to buy a drink and won’t miss out.
Week 10 - The coffee cart will stay for lunch and all students will have the opportunity to make 1 purchase at morning tea or lunch
Term 2 will follow the same pattern with Week 1 being for years 1 and 2 , Week 2 for year 3 and 4 and so on. Reminders each week will be given to the students.
All parents are welcome to buy a coffee in the morning if they wish.
No slushies will be sold - students are welcome to purchase hot chocolates if they wish.
Sales will be stopped to students at 8.55. We ask that you please support this by not purchasing drinks for your child after this time
Parents are welcome to continue purchasing coffee and stay for a chat after 8.55 am
Slushies will be available - small only
Hot/iced chocolates will be available
Sales will stop at 11.15 am
A teacher will monitor the line and ensure it is orderly and fair for all. Please note students will be reminded that they can't let their friends into the line.
As we have a number of allergies students have been told that they are not to purchase drinks for others or ask their friends for money.

Totara and Miro's adventure to Akau Tangi Sports Center .
This week Totara and Miro (Year 1 and 2) travelled by bus to the sports center for a fun day of floorball, futsal, netball and gymnastics. All students were happy and tired by the end of the day!

We had an awesome day at Akau Tangi (ASB Arena). It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm that the children had for each new activity - floorball, gymnastics, turbo touch and netball. They all learnt new skills and showed great sportsmanship.

Recently our class was contacted by a teacher at a school in England who wanted to swap letters between his class and room 12 for World Book Day. The Teacher had been in New Zealand and had worked at Westpark back in 2018. We swapped some letters and the students on both sides were very excited to correspond with students on the other side of the world. Interestingly after being told about Westpark the English students main questions about Westpark were why don’t Westpark students wear uniforms and why do they have to take their shoes off before coming into the classroom? Earthquakes were also mentioned. Some students had heard that schools used to have pen pal programs and how you would have to wait for the post to deliver the letters (we just emailed them). It’s interesting that, since it’s so much easier to communicate with the other side of the world, there isn’t the same incentive to do so. Although we didn’t celebrate World Book Day in the same way as the English school (they had a parade and everything!) books and stories are of course hugely important in our primary school learning. Recently we’ve been reading Danny, The champion of the World, a Roald Dahl classic which seems to be popular with the class.

Let’s Get Movin’ in March!
We’re a Movin’March school and counting down to Wednesday the 1st March when we’ll start stamping passports at the gate as part of the Walk or Wheel Passport Challenge all through March. Walking or wheeling to school is a great way to get active, know your neighbourhood, kick start learning for the day AND take care of the environment. Remember students don’t have to complete their passports to go in the draw to win a $400 MYRIDE voucher at the end of March!
Fancy going in the draw to win a scooter? Parents who take part in our Whānau photo competition on Facebook or Instagram will be in to win 1 of 5 adult or child Micro Scooters or a Family Pass to Staglands or Zealandia. Check out the Movin’March website for more on these competitions and how you can take part.

• A new or worsening cough
• Sneezing and runny nose

you are encouraged to give them a COVID test prior to them returning to school.

Emergency Food Supply
In the case of an emergency that may involve the students being required to stay inside the school grounds for an extended period we hold a supply of canned food. This supply is currently quite low. If you are able to do so we would like each student to bring in a can of tinned beans or fruit with an extended best before date for us to store in case it is ever required.
